The concept of Landing Page Optimization includes engaging a new visitor in the first 15 seconds upon entering your website.
The best method of engaging a new visitor is to satisfy the following three 'mental barriers' before they hit the 'Back' button on their internet browser .
Generally speaking, the 3 mental barriers to overcome are as follows.
Mental Barrier #1 " I don't trust you or your website, I'm leaving !
It is inherent for humans to not trust something they do not understand. Thus, make sure that in the first 15 seconds a new visitor 'knows' they are on the right website that offers what they are looking to find. This is when a header graphic should be clear in its message.
Mental Barrier #2 " I don't want to read anything, I am lazy, let's find another website!"
Humans on the internet can be lazy and will often avoid reading large blocks of text when they first enter a website. Thus, keep copy at the top of the page easy to read and in small 'consumable bites'.
Mental Barrier # 3 " I just want to click something, damn it ! "
Give the visitor a form to fill out, a PDF to download or a video to watch etc. Allow your website to make an impression.
If you can keep a visitor on your website for more than one minute and thirty seconds, research shows, they are more likely to be able to recall YOUR website at a later time instead of saying "I think it was on this a website....."
Landing Page Optimization is Web Works favorite discipline of Search Marketing to study. Too often all efforts are given to get a visitor to the site, so shouldn't we equally work on keeping them ?
- Join the conversation inside the persons head. What are they trying to fix?
- When we go online we don’t search, we are on a quest to make sense so….. help visitors make sense of their options and do it faster than your competitor. Take them to “the land of truth and clarity”
- Show your prospects that you understand them and can give them what they want each step of the way.
- Use photos of the person or product.
- Think to yourself “What’s the one thing I want the visitor to do as a result of visiting this page?”
- Use BBB and credibility logos.
- Use phone number and hours to call
- A landing page should try to
- Answer the persons questions
- Reassure their doubts
- Guide them on what to do next
- Always translate features into benefits, never assume the person will automatically.
- Testimonials work, video and audio are better, they are more believable.
- Make sure your call to action is clear and preferably has a name with it.
- Your page design should be ‘ user ridiculously obvious” - Don’t hide or assume anything.
